Why Teachers Must Act Now
On June 10th the Government launched a package of measures, including AI guidance for schools and colleges, as part of its Plan for Change. It was their pledge to dedicate a £3M fund towards delivering an excellent education for every child. They envisaged AI as playing an integral part in giving teachers the confidence to ‘power-up learning and swap wasted hours spent on admin for time spent inspiring our children.’ (Gov.UK. 10/06/2025) The government rightly sees AI as a tool that will free up educators to spend more face-to-face time with their pupils. At the same time, they issued their first ever AI guidance for Schools to safely provide effective lessons using AI tools. With this guidance in place, educators should feel confident to move forward, taking their lessons in new directions with the use of AI. The Government is actively supporting this shift in direction, with its assertion that, ‘if used safely, effectively and with the right infrastructure in place, AI can ensure that every child and young person, regardless of their background, is able to achieve at school or college and develop the knowledge and skills they need for life.’ (‘Generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education’, Department for Education, June 2025.)
With such positive encouragement and backing on this scale how could any dedicated teaching professional fail to neglect their part in the process? Gov.UK appears to endorse the use of Chat GPT and Microsoft Co-Pilot in educational settings, with the caveat that ‘the risks and challenges presented (by generational AI) must be considered alongside the opportunities and benefits’ (Gov.UK update 12/08/2025).

Although the Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, says, ‘ by harnessing AI’s power to cut workloads, we’re revolutionising classrooms and driving high standards everywhere – breaking down barriers to opportunity so every child can achieve and thrive.’ (ibid) there is still push back from some teachers and tutors. It is perhaps unsurprising, though. Because AI in education is still relatively new, a DfE England 2025 survey found that around half of teachers surveyed do not yet use AI tools. Of those, 64% of teachers said they did not know enough about AI to use it in their role and 35% were concerned about the risks, particularly around data privacy, bias and safeguarding, and users’ ethical and responsible use of AI. Over 60% of teachers specifically requested help with applying AI to planning and support tasks’. (https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-education).
