About This Course

This CPD course equips educators to use AI safely and effectively to personalise support for SEND learners, with a focus on teaching learners with ASC or ADHD. It introduces AI basics, how AI platforms work in education support processing, communication and executive function needs. Learners will explore and compare key AI platforms, so you can identify those most suitable for the needs of your own learners. Design AI assisted lessons withuseful lesson plan templates and hands-on creation of SEND-friendly resources including literacy scaffolds, visual timetables, and checklists for sensory adaption and communication support. You can apply AI strategies to strengthen reading, writing and numeracy outcomes through structured, multi-modal support with sample activities.  The course also covers data protection, bias, safeguarding, appropriate use and professional judgement, with a particular focus on using AI with SEND learners.

Who is this course for?

Teachers, tutors, teaching assistants (TAs), SENCOs, and anyone supporting SEND students.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  •  Explain the core principles of artificial intelligence and describe how AI platforms function within educational contexts to support SEND learners, particularly those with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
  •  Identify cognitive, communication, sensory and executive function needs associated with ASC and ADHD, and explain how AI tools can be used to reduce barriers to learning and increase accessibility.
  •  Evaluate and select appropriate AI platforms and features for SEND-specific applications, demonstrating informed decision-making based on learner needs, curriculum goals, and inclusive practice.
  •  Design and adapt lesson plans using AI tools, incorporating structured supports, clear instructions, and flexible pathways to personalise learning for SEND learners.
  •  Create practical, SEND-friendly resources using AI, including literacy scaffolds, visual supports, checklists, sensory adaptations and communication aids that promote independence and engagement.
  • Apply AI tools to support literacy development, including reading comprehension, written expression and spelling, using structured, multi-modal and personalised strategies.
  •  Use AI-enabled approaches to support numeracy development, including number sense, problem-solving and mathematical language, tailored to the needs of learners with ASC and ADHD.
  •  Demonstrate safe, ethical and responsible use of AI in education, including understanding data protection, safeguarding, bias, consent and appropriate boundaries when working with SEND learners.
  • Maintain professional judgement and accountability when integrating AI into teaching practice, ensuring AI enhances rather than replaces educator expertise and learner-centred decision-making.
  •  Reflect on and plan for the effective integration of AI into their own educational setting to improve outcomes, inclusion and confidence for SEND learners with ASC and ADHD.

Requirements

  • Computer or tablet with internet access.
  • Basic digital skills.
